Abstract
“Focus Transportation & Trade” piece on a federal regulation that will limit hours-of-service for long-haul truckers in order to reduce the risk of fatigue-related crashes. Truck driver fatigue causes an estimated 13% of large-truck crashes nationwide. The American Trucking Associations has challenged the regulations, but a ruling is not expected before the July 1 compliance date, meaning that carriers might be faced with the expense of training and implementing new rules that could then be overturned. Maine carriers will be less affected by the changes since many of the state’s companies are short-haul carriers. With a sidebar explain the HOS rule changes.
