Abstract
James Ferguson of Alba-Technic LLC has designed a helmet that is meant to be both fashionable and practical. At least 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries occur every year, with seniors over the age of 75 sustaining the highest rates of TBI-related hospitalization and death. Alba-Technic plans to market the product largely to medical facilities and senior care centers. The Smarty helmet features a two-layer design, one of which is a honeycomb thermal plastic material that absorbs energy. The company is starting to look at how to automate production of the product, although they still have further work to do on the helmet lining. With a sidebar on Activas Diagnostics LLC of Bangor which has devised the SleepMove detection system to diagnose early cases of mild brain injuries in infants and other patients.
