Abstract

A look at Maine’s bottled water industry which stands to benefit from a nationwide trend that sees consumers drinking more water and fewer carbonated beverages. From Poland Spring, which is owned by Nestle and employs 800 people, to Summit Spring, which markets its high-end Raw Water directly to customers via the Internet, companies must find strategies to make a profit and compete in a crowded field. Maine alone has 18 water bottler plants, and the Passamaquoddy tribe has plans to bottle their own water and create 70 good-paying jobs. With a sidebar illustration that shows how spring water is sourced, and another sidebar that provides definitions of bottled water terminology.
