Abstract

In this edited transcript of an interview, Steven Michaud, president of the Maine Hospital Association for 27 years, talks about Maine’s 37 hospitals and the challenges they face, including uncompensated care and a decline in patient volume. He discusses the paradox of the fact that hospitals are putting more emphasis on keeping people healthy and out of the hospital, which hurts the hospitals’ bottom lines. He also talks about the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid expansion.
