Abstract
An overview of coworking or collaboration spaces in Maine and how they have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Marc Feldman, director of Think Tank Coworking of Biddeford, and Sean Ireland, one of the developers of Union + Co. in Bath, both mourn the loss of community that the pandemic and remote work brought about, and wonder what the future holds. Among the factors contributing to the sense of uncertainty: remote workers deciding they like working from home and large empty office spaces being renovated into small private offices which could draw from the coworking crowd. However, hope for the future of coworking spaces could come from newcomers to Maine, and from the fact that in rural areas with sketchy wifi, workers are used to commuting to a larger town for amenities. The industry should also benefit from state grants.
