Abstract

An overview of Maine craft brewers who are specializing in creative twists in order to stand out in a crowded field (Maine has about 150 craft breweries). Among the breweries featured are Odd by Nature Brewing of Cape Neddick, which creates ice cream IPAs and candy beers, and Pigeon Brewing Co. of Biddeford, the state's first gluten-free brewery. Christy Cain plans to open Olive Pit in Lewiston. She wants to appeal to women and offer less hoppy styles. Sidereal Farm Brewery will offer wild-fermented drinks in Vassalboro, and Hi-Fidelity plans to have plenty of low-alcohol beers for drinkers in Portland's East Bayside neighborhood. Other craft brewers have branched out away from beer and are selling hard cider, seltzer, and kombucha.
