Abstract
Jim Cohen, Portland City Councilor, writes that the opportunity to relocate the Portland Public Library into the former Portland Public Market building is a rare opportunity to transform the downtown library into a comfortable and desirable space, while preserving an architectural gem for the public. The revamp of the market will provide space for reading rooms and materials, and will offer 40 free public parking spaces in the adjacent garage. The Public Market space also provides a jump start for the Library's capital campaign. Cohen urges voters to vote "yes" in the June 12th election authorizing the plan.
