Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on Maine Senate President Mark Lawrence's campaign challenging U.S. senator Olympia Snowe, D-Maine, for her seat in the U.S. Senate. Most political observers suspect that Lawrence is playing the part of what is known in the political trade as a "sacrifical lamb" to put himself in a position to run for Congress or governor two years hence. But a survey of the results of all top races for the past three decades shows not a single instance that an uncompetitive sacrifical lamb has gone on to win a future election to high office. Citing examples of such lambs who were abandoned by their parties. With details about Lawrence's campaign strategy.
