Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on Jonathan Carter and his Forest for the Future campaign. Carter's third forestry referendum, which will be on the ballot in November, would drastically curb clear-cutting and over-cutting of the North Woods. Carter's continuing crusade to change logging practices in Maine has led the paper companies to make Carter the issue, rather than his campaign. The Pulp and Paperworkers' Resource Council, a national organization of forest and mill workers financed by the timber industry, has already distributed literature attacking Carter. With details about Carter's current clear-cutting proposal, his campaign, and the paper industry's personal attacks.
