Abstract

"Cover Story" piece analyzing why Question 6 on Maine's Nov. 7 statewide referendum ballot was defeated. Question 6, which would have guaranteed equal rights to gays and lesbians in Maine, was defeated by just under 5,000 votes, leaving Maine as the only New England state without a law protecting gays and lesbians from discrimination. With special focus on the so-called "Catholic compromise," division within the gay and lesbian communities in Maine, the campaign waged by the Yes on 6 coalition, and the counter-campaign waged by the Christian Coalition and the Christian Civic League.
