Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on a proposal by Maine's Department of Animal Health and Industry to make groups that rescue dogs from the south to quarantine the animals on arrival in Maine. Responsible rescuers already quarantine dogs for two weeks at veterinary hospitals in the South, and evidence that the dogs are bringing diseases into the state is anecdotal. Rescuers lack the facilities to quarantine animals and might have to abandon their rescue work if the proposal passes.
