Abstract

"Politics + Other Mistakes" piece criticizing the coverage of the tax-reform debate in the Portland Press Herald (PPH) and Maine Sunday Telegram (MST), and noting the power of the Portland newspapers to shape political debate. The PPH and MST coverage of the tax-reform debate was akin to an advertisement designed to defeat the proposal, according to public-relations expert Dennis Bailey. The newspaper mentioned only in passing that the tax reform bill would impose a five-percent levy on newspapers, and it did not mention at all that the papers were lobbying furiously against the bill. Bailey said the potential conflict of interest should have been disclosed.
