Abstract

Light-hearted article questioning why Maine lacks high-end retailers like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. Representatives from both companies said the Maine does not meet their criteria for stores, including a large metropolitan area and an affluent customer base. Charlie Colgan, professor of Public Policy and Planning at the Muskie School at the University of Southern Maine, agrees that Maine does not have the income levels to support high-end stores.
