Abstract

To celebrate its 29th year, in this issue of Portland Magazine, the editors have reprinted some classics from their archives, along with new graphics and updates. This article on Marguerite Yourcenar, which first appeared in November 1986, examined her writing of Memoirs of Hadrian, which she had begun when she was only 20, and picked up again when she was 45. With several sidebars that provide additional details on Yourcenar, who died a little over a year after the article was published.
