Abstract

Maine native Howard Whitten, 50, teaches the only public high-school taxidermy class in the nation, at Nakomis Regional High School, west of Bangor. This fall, the Smithsonian Institute donated $1 million worth of taxidermy and frozen specimens to his program, to be shared with College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor. Perhaps surprisingly, his course attracts more girls than boys. There are plans in the works for a taxidermy lending library to be available to students in Maine.
