Abstract

Brief article on the USS Montauk, a Civil War monitor which guarded Portland Harbor during the Spanish-American War. In May, 1898, Portlanders were invited to join a local detail assigned to the Montauk, which was anchored near Fort Gorges. Sixty-five men were chosen to join the ship's complement.
