Abstract

The death of Elizabeth Condon along Route 1 in Yarmouth last summer has prompted town officials to discuss pedestrian and bicyclist safety along the busy highway, which has no sidewalks and only narrow shoulders in some areas. The Maine Department of Transporation plans to resurface the road and widen the paved shoulders between Portland Road and the intersection with Route 88, and planner Steven Westra says it makes sense to coordinate the roadwork with any town-implemented improvements.
