Abstract
Maine has permitted commercial deer farming since July 1989, and there are now 32 licensed deer farms in the state. Twelve of those farms raise red deer, 18 raise fallow deer and two raise Japanese sika deer for non-commercial use. Farmers are hoping venison, which is low-fat and low-cholesterol, will become a popular alternative to beef. Details.
