Abstract

A Maine Forest Service survey released on Monday shows that the state's supply of spruce and fir trees suitable for lumber and papermaking declined during the 1980s. Consequently, the state's lumber mills will face stiff competition for logs during the next two decades. The spruce-fir harvest for papermaking between 1985 and 1991 declined from 1.65 million to 1.15 million cords, resulting in an increase in the use of hardwood and recycled pulp in the paper industry.
