Abstract

Article about the fight shaping up between Portland and Gloucester, Mass., as the two ports compete to maintain or increase their share of a dwindling fish market. In 1980, the value of fish landings made Gloucester the 8th largest fishing port in the nation; Portland ranked only 28th. Today, Portland is No. 8 port, while Gloucester no longer ranks among the top ten. The industry is being affected by dwindling fishing stocks and increasingly more restrictive federal regulations. Gloucester is trying to buck the trend with a new $10 million fish pier.
