Abstract

The U.S. Coast Guard this year has announced plans to transfer ownership of four lighthouses in Maine and New Hampshire, including Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, White Island Lighthouse on the Isles of Shoals, Heron Neck Lighthouse off Vinalhaven and Burnt Coat Harbor Lighthouse on Swan's Island. The Coast Guard lacks money and staff to maintain the lighthouses, and in the future will likely deed more of the structures to towns, states and institutions which can preserve them. Details.
