Abstract

The Legislature's Taxation Committee on Friday was told to expect to be asked to locate ways to offset revenue shortfalls, a sign that budget problems are likely. One likely issue is the 7-percent tax on nursing homes, which recently come under federal scrutiny. A ruling by the Clinton administration that Maine is ineligible to receive federal funds to match state tax receipts could result in a $20 million, two-year budget gap.
