Abstract

State and federal authorities say they are satisfied that the Maine Department of Transporation's failure to identify 200 acres of freshwater wetlands on Sears Island was a mistake rather than an intentional criminal act. A federal Environmental Protection Agency probe into alleged wrongdoings at the Sears Island site by MDOT and contractor Normandeau Associates revealed that there was abundant evidence showing that wetlands existed on the island, but the investigation was halted after it was criticized by members of Maine's congressional delegation.
