Abstract

Former Maine State Prison Warden Paul Vestal, who now serves as executive director of Maine Advocacy Services, this week wrote a letter to Gov. McKernan and the Legislature's Corrections Committee criticizing what he calls the inappropriate use of the new maximum security prison in South Warren. Vestal says that inmates in protective custody and those with serious mental health problems are being kept at the prison, which was designed to hold the system's most dangerous prisoners. Details.
