Abstract

Portland-based Consumers Water Co., the state's largest investor-owned water utility, has proposed merging the Maine Water Co., Camden & Rockland Water Co. and the Wanakah Water Co., which it says will lower a pending $3.2 million annual rate increase by as much as 7 percent. Municipal officials are suspicious of the savings claims, and dispute Consumers Water's contention that the rate hike is needed to comply with the 1986 amendments to the federal Safe Water Drinking Act.
