Abstract

The high school dropout rate for Maine has decreased from 4 percent in 1987-88 to 2.8 percent in 1991-92. An official with the Maine Department of Education credits two 1989 laws with contributing to the decrease. The first law subjects employers hiring high school dropouts under age 17 to hefty fines, while another law reduces work hours allowable for students.
