Abstract

Portland city officials have proposed putting school crossing guards under the control of the school department, which would allow the city to put the $100,000 annual cost for the guards in the school budget and submit it to the state for reimbursement. Schools officials say the guards are part of the public safety program and should remain under the police department's parking division, which currently supervises the crossing guard program.
