Abstract

Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the state's largest health-insurance company with 500,000 subscribers, has announced plans to convert nearly half of its members from traditional policies to some form of managed care by the fall of 1995 -- Managed care, which restricts choice and stresses primary care and preventive medicine, is replacing traditional indemnity insurance across the nation because of its promise to help in controlling medical costs -- Around 10 percent of Mainers, or 112,000 individuals, participate in managed care programs run by Blue Cross and Healthsource Maine Inc -- Details
