Abstract

Bulgarian president Zhelyu Zhelev received an honorary degree from the University of Maine for his commitment to intellectual and political freedom. The University of Maine has helped in the planning and development of the American University in Bulgaria and is designing and monitoring academic programs that will lead to a degree accredited by Maine.
