Abstract

A review of the way the 37,000 state workers enrolled in the Maine State Select program receive health care appears to show that managed care can bring about dramatic changes in how people use medical services. The state's largest managed-care program was instituted a year ago, and already enrollees are making fewer trips to the emergency room and spending more time with their family doctors. More health insurers are moving to managed care programs, and the Maine State Select experience will help define the future of the state's health-care system. Details.
