Abstract

The Legislature's Taxation Committee yesterday gave its unanimous support to a proposal to give Maine's paper mills a state subsidy equal to 3 percent of the cost of new pollution-control equipment. The equipment, mandated by the federal government, is expected to cost $1 billion in Maine alone. Under the subsidy proposal, the state will spend $3 million in 1995 and $6 million in each of the following three years to help the mills pay for the improvements. Details.
