Abstract

The Legislature yesterday approved an additional $7 million in state aid for local education, but school districts expecting increases will realize only 60 percent of the amount expected. Schools in southern Maine will be hit hardest under the Legislature's so-called 60/40 plan, with Portland receiving $2 million less than it should have and South Portland seeing a $450,000 reduction in its expected allocation. Details, related article, approximate state funding for local education in municipalities in Cumberland, Knox, Lincoln Sagadahoc and York counties.
