U.S. Senate Majority Leader George J. Mitchell, who, on Tuesday, withdrew his name from consideration as a replacement for retiring U.S. Supreme Court justice Harry A. Blackmun, has apparently emerged as the favorite candidate for the position of commissioner of Major League Baseball.
