Abstract

U.S. senator George J. Mitchell has been refunding campaign contributions at the rate of more than $100,000 a week since announcing that he will not seek reelection. At the end of March he still had nearly $1.6 million on hand. A report filed U.S. represenative Thomas Andrews, who is running unopposed for the Democratic nomination to succeed Mitchell, shows that Andrews has amassed $216,000 through March 31. U.S. represenative Olympia J. Snowe, who is unopposed for the Republican nomination for Mitchell's position, indicated her report financial report has not yet been completed. Mitchell plans to use unreturned contributions to create a scholarship fund to help Maine students.
