Abstract

First quarter figures for S. D. Warren, which operates mills in Westbrook, Skowhegan and Muskegon, Mich., show that sales fell 4 percent and profits decreased 59 percent because of weak demand and a glut in the coated paper market. The decrease in profitability and the election of Albert J. Dunlap as the new chairman of Scott Paper Co., the parent of S. D. Warren, could bode poorly for the Westbrook mill, which already is facing the shutdown of two of its five paper machines by September. Details.
