Abstract

Velpar, a herbicide marketed by DuPont, was first registered for use in Maine in 1983. After the chemical was introduced, annual blueberry production climbed from 20 million pounds to nearly 50 million pounds by the late 1980s, to the record 1992 crop of 84 million pounds. In 1991, Velpar was found in a well in Gouldsboro, and since then has been discovered in Aurora and Franklin, and recently the Maine Atlantic Sea Run Salmon Commission discovered Velpar in samples taken from the Narraguagus River. The contamination is being taken seriously in an area that relies on the blueberry industry for work. Details.
