Abstract

St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston is currently running an ad campaign to promote its expanding network of primary-care doctors, part of the hospital's aggressive effort to position itself for the changeover to managed health care. The hospital doesn't expect to make money directly from the patients cared for by the doctors, but hopes to keep them as patients and be paid to care for them over a long period of time. As insurance companies and health maintenance organizations move toward a system of managed care, hospitals are increasingly seeing primary medicine and primary physicians as the key to the future.
