Abstract

The Washburn & Doughty shipyard was started in 1977 when Bruce Doughty, Carl Pianka and Bruce Washburn pooled their money, purchased some steel and began building a fishing boat in a small shop in Brunswick. The shipyard, now in East Boothbay, recently launched the 150-foot Emerald Empress, a dinner cruise boat complete with brass railings and ornate wall lighting. Other shipyards are failing, but Washburn & Doughty has become stronger by finding alternate markets. Details.
