Abstract

Testing by the state Department of Environmental Protection has revealed high levels of sodium in residential wells near Freeport's closed landfill and recycling center. The sodium is thought to come from road salt, since the highest concentrations appear to be near an intersection that is heavily salted during the winter. The concentrations of sodium do not exceed state or federal drinking water standards, but could be dangerous for individuals with high blood pressure. Details.
