Abstract

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Thomas H. Allen has toned down the volume of his campaign. Earlier in the race he relentlessly attacked former Democratic governor Joseph E. Brennan, one of the presumed front-runners in the current primary. Allen's strategy was intended to position himself as Brennan's major contender in five-way race. Observers aren't sure whether Allen has backed away form the attacks because he has positioned himself as he wanted or because of the criticism provoked by his tactics.
