Abstract

Last in a four-week series on Maine's forests and forest products. Nearly 4 million tons of forest products were exported through the Mobile, Ala., port last year, more than triple the amount in 1987 and 52 percent of the Gulf Coast market. The figure is more than triple Maine's total cargo exports for 1992, and some believe that if Maine wants to succeed with marketing its forest products it must emulate Alabama by building a world-class seaport that can take advantage of the growing international demand for wood and wood products.
