Abstract

The Maine College of Art bought the 90-year-old Porteous building on Congress Street a year ago for $525,000, and plans to have it ready for classes by September of next year. The school will invest nearly $9 million in the project, which is designed to give the 300 art students a sense of community. The renovation was added this week to a federal Environmental Protection Agency list of buildings that showcase the conversion from energy hog to power saver. The Croxton Collaborative, which recently worked on a building known as the most energy-efficient in Manhattan, is collaborating on the Porteous project. Details.
