Abstract

"Marine Watch" piece on the elver fishery in Maine. From April through June fishermen catch millions of the baby eels and ship them to Japan, where they are raised in culture ponds and sold as fish food. There are between 1,500 and 3,500 elvers to a pound, and pounds are currently selling for between $50 and $100 in Japan because of a shortage of elvers in that country.
