Abstract

Jeanne Bassett of the U.S. Public Interest Research Group was in Portland yesterday to release the findings of a national study on playgrounds done in conjunction with the Consumer Federation of America. Bassett used the playground at Reiche School as an example of some of the hazards found in playgrounds nationwide. The study of 443 playgrounds in 22 states, including 11 in Maine, found that 92 percent were built on surfaces too hard to safely cushion a child's fall, and 57 percent had equipment that was higher than needed.
