Abstract

The Episcopal Diocese of Maine this month confirmed that the Church of the Holy Spirt has won full parish status after existing seven years as a mission church. Most of the 50 parishioners of Holy Spirit are quite conservative, believing in the literal interpretation of the Bible. Many are opposed to the ordination of women and homosexuals. The church follows the Book of Common prayer but is more participatory and charismatic than mainline Episocpal churches. The parish, which has no church building, holds its services at the Cheverus High School chapel and is led by the Rev. James King.
