Abstract

Maine employers will pay a 9.5 percent surcharge on workers' compensation insurance premiums this year, up 2 percent over last year's surcharge. The surcharge is used to cover a debt incurred by the Maine workers' compensation system during policy years 1988 to 1991. The deficit is now thought to be somewhere between $214.4 million and $341 million, rather than the more than $500 million estimated by the National Council on Compensation Insurance two years ago.
