Abstract

A large number of health insurance claims in the Maine State Select plan, which covers 37,000 state workers, retirees and their families, indicates the plan will face a shortfall of $5 million to $7 million in its first year of operation. The projected deficit will translate into an average 17 percent increase in health insurance premiums beginning next month. The plan was supposed to have saved $2 million in its first year, but more claims are being filed because people are taking advantage of the part of the plan that provides free visits to family doctors for routine checkups and preventive care.
