Abstract

Members of the Portland Youth Conservation Corps and the Maine Conservation Corp. watched yesterday as the Liberty launch boat Opportunity was lowered into Portland Harbor. The launching of the Opportunity was symbolic of the launching of President Clinton's new AmeriCorps summer service program in Maine. Twenty-five youths will use the vessel starting Wednesday, to test the water quality near Casco Bay islands, as they become the first in the country to do community service work under the new National Service Act. The article describes other public works projects to be undertaken.
