Abstract

Up to 1,500 prehistoric archaeological sites in Maine are threatened by rising tides, and other prehistoric and colonial sites are likewise threatened by the construction of new homes in coastal communities. To stem the loss and destruction of important archaeological sites, Emerson Baker, the director of the York Institute Museum in Saco, stresses the need for towns to survey for historic sites and then plan for their protection. Focuses on the work of Tim Dinsmore, an archaeologist working near the Damariscotta River, who hopes to find evidence of a mid-seventheenth century home.
