Abstract

Political analysts believe that in nominating Joseph E. Brennan and Susan Collins as their candidates for governor, the Democratic and Republican parties might have weakened the candidacy of Angus King, the leading Independent. Both Brennan and Collins are centrists who will make it difficult for King to draw voters from either party. Observers believe King would be a stronger contender if the Democratics had nominated someone more liberal, and the Republicans had nominated someone more conservative.
